What is a core resource?
Core Resources
A core resource is a foundational or key resource that complements a curriculum in an especially effective way. It may be a comprehensive resource that broadly addresses several of the student learning outcomes (e.g., a major integrated resource, series, textbook), an in-depth student resource that addresses at least one student learning outcome or a professional resource for educators.

Building a Smokehouse: The Geometry of Prisms
Modules in the Math in a Cultural Context Series: Lessons learned from Yup'ik Eskimo Elders provide an example of how to explore the multiculturalism of mathematics.
In Building a Smokehouse: The Geometry of Prisms, students learn the properties of three-dimensional shapes by building smokehouse models. Students identify congruent faces, describe the angles between faces and determine the number of faces in the three-dimensional shape. They explore the properties of triangular prisms as they frame their model smokehouse roofs. Students learn how to calculate surface area for the siding.
This series was developed in partnership with the Yup'ik Inuit Elders in Alaska and with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. It provides an authentic example of ways to integrate First Nations, Métis and Inuit content, to incorporate cultural ways of knowing and to bridge gaps between different ways of knowing and understanding. The series includes cultural stories given by Elders.

Big Ideas from Dr. Small. Grades 9-12: Creating a Comfort Zone for Teaching Mathematics
This resource provides suggestions to secondary level teachers on how to teach the secondary level teachers on how to teach the curriculum while focusing on the big ideas of mathematical concepts. By considering the big ideas when planning instruction and assessment, students are able to relate the new knowledge to previously learned concepts. It is important to remember the big ideas are explicit and that students have the opportunity to focus on the big ideas and connect the various mathematical ideas they encounter.
Each chapter introduces a collection of big ideas for a mathematical concept. Planning suggestions allow educators to look at curriculum outcomes through a big ideas lens and focus on lesson goals to make the big ideas explicit. Additional teaching ideas and model questions are also included.
The book includes a table of contents, a glossary and an index.
