What is a core resource?
Core Resources
A core resource is a foundational or key resource that complements a curriculum in an especially effective way. It may be a comprehensive resource that broadly addresses several of the student learning outcomes (e.g., a major integrated resource, series, textbook), an in-depth student resource that addresses at least one student learning outcome or a professional resource for educators.

The Mathematics of Oz: Mental Gymnastics From Beyond the Edge
Dorothy is again uprooted from her home! In The Mathematics of Oz: Mental Gymnastics From Beyond the Edge, Dorothy must solve an array of brainteasers in order to escape the clutches of her abductors, a group of mathematically obsessed aliens. Each short chapter is a mathematical adventure in which Dorothy is presented with a mystery, a puzzle or a problem to solve. The author rates the problems in terms of difficulty. One does not have to complete all the chapters or complete the chapters sequentially. Quotes from The Wizard of Oz and cartoon diagrams add to the resource.

A Visual Approach to Functions
Consisting of individual lessons with blackline masters and teacher notes, this resource introduces linear, exponential and quadratic functions encountered in algebra. Each chapter features a graph and a series of statements describing a function that are explored prior to the introduction of tables or algebraic notation. Subsequent chapter lessons introduce coordinates, quantitative graphs and tables. To deepen conceptual understanding of a function, the activities emphasize verbal, numeric, visual and algebraic representation. Ideas for incorporating graphing calculators are included at the end of each chapter.

Big Ideas from Dr. Small. Grades 9-12: Creating a Comfort Zone for Teaching Mathematics
This resource provides suggestions to secondary level teachers on how to teach the secondary level teachers on how to teach the curriculum while focusing on the big ideas of mathematical concepts. By considering the big ideas when planning instruction and assessment, students are able to relate the new knowledge to previously learned concepts. It is important to remember the big ideas are explicit and that students have the opportunity to focus on the big ideas and connect the various mathematical ideas they encounter.
Each chapter introduces a collection of big ideas for a mathematical concept. Planning suggestions allow educators to look at curriculum outcomes through a big ideas lens and focus on lesson goals to make the big ideas explicit. Additional teaching ideas and model questions are also included.
The book includes a table of contents, a glossary and an index.

Green Globs and Graphing Equations
This resource has two components: a basic graphing utility and an interactive series of games. The graphing utility allows the user to graph linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, absolute value and trigonometric relations. The games require students to relate points on the graph and the equations of functions and/or relations. At its highest level, students must first probe using equations of vertical and horizontal lines to determine the location of points and then must determine the exact equations that they represent. This tool provides a hands-on experience for the students when learning the connections between relations and the resulting graphs.
A teacher's guide accompanies the software and provides ideas and worksheets.

Who is Fourier?: A Mathematical Adventure(2nd ed.)
Originally, the idea for this learning resource was conceived as a means of relating the mathematical insights of university students to their colleagues. Students, who each explored a different aspect of Fourier, write detailed explanations of their discoveries in each chapter. Mathematical concepts in trigonometry, exponentiation, differentiation and integration are explored through real-life examples. The authors then use these examples to illustrate a direct application of these areas of mathematics to complex Fourier analysis. This resource provides insight into the development of mathematical understanding through the eyes of students. The book includes a table of contents, an index and a bibliography.
