Demonstrate, when interpreting oral and written texts, knowledge of Spanish language concepts including vocabulary, sentence structure and linguistic conventions.
Indicators for this outcome
(a)

Explain vocabulary and phrasing such as:

  • vocabulary in context, for various text types (p. ej., los hispanohablantes en el mundo, español, identidad lingüística, las aventuras, las becas, las carreras);
  • adverbs (p. ej., muy, fácilmente, de repente);
  • useful phrases for various contexts and text types (p. ej., “el baile de fin de curso”, “la graduación”, “subir al avión”, “desde mi punto de vista”, “Señor, muchas gracias por su consideración”);
  • the interrogative form with future tense (p. ej., “¿Vas a España?”, “¿Vamos a bailar allí?”);
  • sentences with the preposition “si” (p. ej., “Si fuera rico, viajaría a España”); and,
  • expressions (p. ej., “Qué guay”; “Genial”).
(b)

Analyze the use of the following verb conjugations:

  • imperfect tense of irregular verbs (p. ej., hacer, ir, tener);
  • past tense (e.g., present perfect, preterite, imperfect) of regular and irregular verbs (p.ej., compartir, escribir, viajar) and familiar verbs;
  • past tense of pronominal and reflexive verbs (p. ej., “se despertó tarde”);
  • conditional present tense regular and irregular verbs (p. ej., dibujar, escuchar, terminar, hacer, ir, tener);
  • present conditional tense with regular, irregular and common verbs (p. ej., hacer, ir, tener, ser, estar);
  • present subjunctive of irregular, regular and common verbs (p. ej., dibujar, escuchar, terminar, hacer, ir, ser, estar); and,
  • future simple of regular, irregular and common verbs (p. ej., dibujar, escuchar, terminar, hacer, ir, estar, ser).
(c)

Examine how linguistic conventions enhance communication, including:

  • indirect object pronouns (p. ej., me, te, le);
  • compound prepositions (p. ej., abajo de, a bordo de, a cargo de);
  • complex prepositions (p. ej., cerca de, encima de, lejos de, fuera de);
  • complex conjunctions (p. ej., pues, entonces, sino, pero, sobre eso).
  • conjunctions (p. ej., mientras que, desde que, donde); and,
  • spelling and punctuation.
(d) Recognize and describe conventions of informal and formal language.
(e) Compare how language use varies in different types of oral and written texts.
