Demonstrate, when producing oral and written texts, knowledge of Spanish language concepts including basic context-specific vocabulary, word order and linguistic conventions.
Indicators for this outcome
(a) Produce and pronounce basic word structures using phonetic sounds and structures.
(b)

Apply basic knowledge of grammatical components in short sentences, including:

  • word order in sentence structure;
  • negation in regular verb tenses in the present tense (p. ej., “No me gusta la película.”);
  • common and proper nouns;
  • feminine and masculine nouns;
  • singular and plural nouns;
  • personal subject pronouns (p. ej., yo, tú, el, ella, usted, nosotros, vosotros, ustedes, ellos, ellas);
  • indefinite and definite articles (p. ej., el, la, los, las, un, una, uno, unos, unas);
  • conjunctions (p. ej., así que, aunque, pues, pero, y, ni, sino);
  • punctuation, accents and spelling (p. ej., signos de exclamación [¡!], signos de interrogación [¿?], punto [.]);
  • abbreviations (p. ej., Señor [Sr.], Señora [Sra.], Señorita [Srta.]); and,
  • prefixes (p. ej., bi-, multi-, co-, super-, mini-, des-).
(c)

Employ context-specific and common vocabulary such as:

  • vocabulary in context (p. ej., los hispanohablantes en Saskatchewan, español, la comunidad, el clima, la preferencia, las vacaciones, danza y comida tradicional, el actor, la actriz principal, los juegos, el juego de cartas);
  • adjectives (p. ej., una hermosa provincia, una celebración cultural, un juego divertido);
  • adverbs (p. ej., mucho, muy rápido);
  • useful phrases for various contexts (p. ej., “Me llamo…”, “Ella tiene el cabello negro.”, “No me gustan las cebollas.”, “Hoy hace sol.”);
  • the interrogative form (p. ej., “¿tienes un bolígrafo?”); and,
  • expressions (p. ej., “me gusta”, “no me gusta”).
(d)

Conjugate the following commonly used Spanish verbs in familiar contexts:

  • present tense, regular (ar) (er) (ir) verbs (p. ej., cantar and escribir);
  • present tense, irregular verbs in common and in context (p. ej., ser, ver, jugar, estar, haber, tener, poder, hacer, ir, poner); and,
  • present tense, imperative regular verbs (p. ej., dibujar, escuchar, terminar).
(e)

Experiment with the use of the following verb tenses:

  • the present tense with pronominal and reflexive verbs (p. ej., “Yo me maquillo todas las mañanas.”); and,
  • the past tense with irregular and regular verbs (p. ej., dibujar, escuchar, terminar, hacer, ir, ir, tener) and familiar verbs.
(f)

Apply the use of linguistic conventions such as:

  • structure of text;
  • choice of words;
  • placement of adjectives;
  • the comparative and superlative of adjectives (p. ej., “la ciudad más bonita”);
  • direct object pronouns (p. ej., me, te, lo, nos, os, los);
  • indirect object pronouns (p. ej., me, te, le, nos, os, los); and,
  • simple prepositions (p. ej., por, para, desde, sobre, hasta).
(g)

Communicate using appropriate conventions of informal and formal language:

  • informal (e.g., use informal language and tone with familiar expressions and use words like “tú, vosotros”); and,
  • formal (e.g., use formal language and tone with formal expressions and use words like “usted”).
