Indicators for this outcome
(a) Use and assess a variety of cognitive strategies* to enhance communication, such as:
  • assess similarities and differences between aspects of ASL and students’ other languages;
  • group together sets of signs (e.g., vocabulary, structures) with similar characteristics and use induction to generate rules governing language use; or,
  • make information easier to understand and remember by using reference points and initiatives like classifiers and body shifts.
(b) Demonstrate and assess a variety of interactive and affective strategies* to enhance communication, such as:
  • participate cooperatively in conferencing, brainstorming and debating and invite others into the discussion;
  • initiate or maintain interaction with signers who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing; or,
  • use a range of fillers, hesitation devices and gambits to sustain conversations.
(c) Practise and assess a variety of productive strategies* to enhance communication, such as:
  • employ rhythm and symmetry in signs and use familiar patterns appropriate for various genres;
  • revise and improve expressive communications by using knowledge of patterns and structures in ASL to form new sentences; or,
  • rephrase difficult structures or strategically use circumlocution to clarify communication.
