Integrate, with assistance as necessary, the understanding of the muscial text into a personal musical performance.
Indicators for this outcome
(a)

Prepare, rehearse and perform music in jazz style in solo, small group and/or large ensemble settings.

(b)

Model through performance and/or instruct through sectionals, a deep understanding of the musical text. This may include:

  • demonstrating phrasing;
  • describing the historical context/meaning of the text;
  • using proper syllabic emphasis;
  • bringing out important words in the text;
  • connecting the music or melody to the text;
  • describing the cultural significance of the text;
  • telling a story with the music and text;
  • comparing and contrasting vocal jazz style to other vocal styles.
(c)

Experiment with text through creating original text to pre-existing melodies and improvisations (vocalese)

(d)

Develop knowledge of conventions regarding jazz articulation and use those conventions in performance.

(e)

Begin to use jazz vocabulary and use this vocabulary to describe personal musical practise, learning, theory and performance (see Jazz Glossary).
