Season of Rage: Hugh Burnett and the Struggle for Civil Rights
The Deep South was not the only place that black people and white people could not sit together for a cup of coffee in a restaurant. Slaves who made their way north through the Underground Railroad created the Dawn Settlement in Dresden, Ontario before and during the American civil war.
The National Unity Association was a group of African-Canadian citizens who challenged the racist attitudes of the 1950s. In 1954, an alliance was formed between the National Unity Association and civil rights activists to push the Ontario government to change the law to outlaw discrimination.
Despite the passing of the law, some business owners continued refusing to serve black customers. The National Unity Association used a variety of methods of protest to change attitudes.

Innocence Lost: A Play About Steven Truscott
In June 1959, 12-year-old Lynne Harper is found raped and strangled in an Ontario woodlot. A few months later, her classmate, 14-year-old Steven Truscott, is convicted of her murder and sentenced to death by hanging.
A young woman named Sarah guides the audience through the play. She moves effortlessly from the past to the present to tell the story. Through Sarah, the audience understands how a community became fearful and how a young man was found guilty due to rumour and innuendo.
Truscott is the youngest Canadian sentenced to death. His case served as the impetus for the abolishment of capital punishment in Canada. In 1960, his death sentence was commuted to life in prison. In 2007, the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled that Truscott's conviction was a miscarriage of justice and he was acquitted of the crime.
The play was a finalist for the 2009 Governor General's Award.

Out in the Cold
Thomas is dumped on the outskirts of the city. There he meets two men, Soft as Snow and Cold as Ice. When Thomas suggests the two men should walk back to the city with him, Cold as Ice and Soft as Snow persuade him to stay the night. Cold as Ice wants Thomas to die and join them; Soft as Snow wants Thomas to survive the night so he can return to the city and tell people their story. Filmed in black and white, the program is inspired by the freezing deaths of several First Nations men in Saskatoon. The police practice of taking individuals to an isolated edge of the city where they would be beaten or abandoned earns Canada a place on the 2001 Amnesty International report of human rights abuses. This film will stimulate discussion about the state of disregard and oppression faced by Indigenous people in Canada and around the world.

Reel Injun: On the Trail of the Hollywood Indian
Neil Diamond examines the portrayal of First Nations people in cinema. Diamond travels through the U.S. and shows how the myth of the "Injun" has influenced the world's understanding and misunderstanding of First Nations people. Diamond interviews individuals such as Adam Beach, Graham Greene, Robby Robertson, Sancheen Cruz Littlefeather and Clint Eastwood for their input.
The program is divided into sections and takes the viewer on a journey, starting with the silent film era, where many First Nations people acted in, starred in and directed films. During the 1930s, the stagecoach films changed public perception by the depiction of the "brutal savage" and "Tonto speak." These subsequent films damaged First Nations people for decades.
Little Big Man is one of the first movies to present First Nations as individuals and not as stereotypes. As cinema enters the 21st century, contemporary stories are coming to the forefront. First Nations actors, writers, songwriters and directors take lead roles in the film industry.
Due to the length of the program, educators are encouraged to select portions of the program for classroom use.

Prom Night in Mississippi(Canadian ed.)
Canadian filmmaker Paul Saltzman explores racism in the Deep South. In 1970, black students are finally allowed to attend the one high school in Charleston, Mississippi. White parents refuse to have an integrated graduation dance, starting the tradition of separate, parent-organized White Proms and Black Proms.
In 1997, Morgan Freeman offers to pay for the senior prom under one condition - it had to be racially integrated; his offer was ignored. In 2008, Freeman makes the same offer. The school board accepts, and the graduating class is set to make history.
Saltzman follows the community as they prepare for the integrated prom. Some white parents refuse to have their children attend the integrated prom and organize a "white only" prom. Students, teachers and parents provide their thoughts on the integrated prom. Change does not come easily to Charleston as racism is still prevalent and has a distinct, generational feel.
Additional material can be found on the website at www.promnightinmississippi.com.
