Dude, Listen to This!: Engaging Boy Writers
Ralph Fletcher examines boys and writing. He studies what inspires boys, what shuts them down and how teachers can nurture boys writing. In this video, a group of boys voluntarily give up their recess time to meet and discuss their writing. The video is divided into three sections. In the first section, Fletcher joins Jennifer Allen during one of her weekly boy writers' clubs. The boys share their stories and feedback from the other participants is encouraged. The boys are supportive of each other and their writing. In section two, Fletcher teaches a lesson in a Grade 4 class using memory maps. The final section has the staff debrief about what they have learned about boys and their writing throughout the school year. The viewing guide includes questions for discussion, samples of student work and a listing of suggested resources for further reading. The strategies presented in the video can be used for male and female students in the classroom.

Word After Word After Word
Lucy, Henry, Evie, Russell and May are in the fourth grade. Every school day feels the same until one day a writer comes to class. Ms. Mirabel describes to the students that writing allows her to participate - to find out what is going to happen. She tells the students that they each have a story to tell, whether it is a poem, a character, a place or a moment in time.
As they reflect daily on what Ms. Mirabel teaches about the writing process, Lucy, Henry, Evie, Russell and May each learn to express their thoughts and feelings through various forms of writing.
The book includes a table of contents.
